Process

We started with creating the storyboards of our animation. The process for that was documented here.

The main story is about how our main character, named Maslow, grows from a blob to its full form by going through different stages of its life.

Before we started animating, Spencer and I prepared some concept art in Photoshop to create the character itself and the backgrounds.

The colors in these backgrounds indicate the progression of stages.

After having these ready, we began to create the animation in After Effects.

Following are the gifs rendered, and I was responsible for the “love” stage.

After we are done with the animations, we started to think about how we wanted to present them physically. There were a lot of elements we would hope to incorporate. With the color palette, we also wanted to utilize the swell machine to increase the accessibility of the project. We thought about multiple options: making a zine of the keyframes, separating the regular version from the accessible version, stacking the frames to create the markers, etc.

But we ended up choosing one keyframe for each of the scenes, printing them out with patterns and outlines, putting them into the swell machine to form the tactile, and using these frames as the AR markers.
